The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides low- and moderate-income individuals and families with free, reliable assistance in filing federal tax returns. In 2019, thousands of VITA volunteers prepared millions of tax returns nationwide resulting in more than $1.8 billion returning to local communities.
While most VITA sites closed their physical doors in March, and will remain closed for the foreseeable future, many sites are working hard, both virtually and through drop offs, to continually serve low-income households. In order to continue serving as many clients as possible through the extended tax deadline of July 15th and beyond, we are requesting $12 million in additional emergency federal funding, making total funding for VITA in the 2020 fiscal year $30 million. This funding will allow hundreds of VITA sites across the country to increase their capacity to serve clients who rely on free tax preparation to access the Earned Income Tax Credit and Economic Impact Payments to help weather the current crisis.
