Offering Low-Cost, Reliable Transportation for Health Care Visits

United Way's Ride United is connecting people to reliable rides that get them to medical services and appointments

A mother and child read a book with a medical professional in a doctor's office.

United Way's Ride United initiative has served more than 178,000 unique riders and completed more than 726,000 rides since launching in 2018.

For millions of people, getting to a doctor's appointment isn't as simple as getting in a car. Transportation remains one of the most common barriers to accessing health care in the United States.

Research from the National Health Interview Survey found that an estimated 5.8 million Americans delayed medical care because they lacked transportation, with the greatest impact on people with low incomes, older adults, people with disabilities and those managing chronic health conditions.

Missing a doctor's appointment can make it harder for people to stay healthy. It may mean waiting longer for care, missing important checkups or screenings, or letting a health problem get worse. Research shows that transportation support can help people get to their appointments and get the care they need.

How Ride United Helps

Ride United helps remove transportation barriers by connecting people with reliable rides to essential services and appointments.

Thanks to generous support from GM and through partnerships with local United Ways, the 211 network and Lyft, Ride United helps people:

  • Get to medical appointments and treatments
  • Access preventive and routine health care
  • Attend mental and behavioral health appointments
  • Pick up prescriptions and medications
  • Reach other critical health and human services

More than 726,800 Ride United trips have helped people overcome transportation barriers and access essential services, including health care appointments that might otherwise have been out of reach.

By making transportation more accessible, Ride United helps people stay connected to the care they need to live healthier lives.
