Kevon's Story

Kevon and his family

He was born facing unimaginable odds: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, a prolonged hospital stay, and no family to welcome him home. At just three years old, Kevon had already experienced more instability than most do in a lifetime.

With help from United Way of Greater St. Louis and its network of community partners, including the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition, Kevon’s story began to change. They found his mother’s extended family, and incredibly, they did not even know he’d been born.  On Adoption Saturday in November 2024, Kevon’s family was able to take him home and he officially became part of a loving household.

“Everyone was so happy about it, this was something new, a first-time experience for us to go through the whole adoption process,” said Michelle, Kevon's adopter. “At the end when everything was all done, the outcome was such a big relief, and we were happy that he could live with us full-time without the fear of being taken away again.”

When we care for children, especially those who are most vulnerable, we’re investing in stronger, more resilient communities. Early care and stable environments shape how children grow and how communities thrive. Each year, United Way helps more than 400,000 children and youth across Greater St. Louis through its programs and partnerships. And each child, like Kevon, carries the future with them.
