How 211 Keeps Arizonans Safe in Extreme Heat

Arizona’s heat season spans May through September, but for many, the need begins earlier and stretches well into October. In 2024 alone, 211 Arizona arranged more than 9,000 Lyft rides for people with no safe way to escape the heat.

The callers vary—unsheltered individuals, older adults avoiding high utility bills, families caught between groceries and gas money. “I’m homeless,” said one caller. “Some of my friends didn’t make it last year. This is a life-saving service.”

Each ride opens the door to more support. One woman called from a cooling center, asking for transportation back to her car. She and her husband, both in their 70s, had recently lost housing. “We’re grateful for you being there,” she said. “We don’t take it for granted.”

When the Phoenix Fire Department requested help for a man stranded during a holiday, a 211 agent didn’t stop when the first ride fell through. They rebooked and confirmed the man reached shelter.

Behind the scenes, the team tracks data trends and follows up. As usage grew, so did cases of repeat riders. Rather than turn people away, 211 Arizona began reaching out to understand what else might be going on. “That question ‘why is she calling every day?’ led us to deeper support,” said Tara Bingdazzo, Senior Director of 211 Arizona.

These rides, made possible through support from Maricopa County Department of Public Health and Ride United, also connect people to cooling centers, HVAC repairs, shelters, and food banks.

You’re there when no one else is.”

“I’m so thankful,” one caller said. “You’re there when no one else is.”

In the hottest months of the year, 211 Arizona is answering the call and helping people stay safe.
