For many women in India, the lack of access to vocational education is a major barrier to building financial and social stability.

United Way Chennai is nurturing new opportunities for women through Project Thulir, whose name reflects the Tamil word meaning "sprout."

The multifaceted program offers hands-on skill development, training in enterprise management, financial literacy, and direct access to the marketplace.

In 2025, the program reached more than 3,365 women, including 315 women with disabilities and 81 transgender people.

Across India, more than 10,000 women have received assistance to cultivate and grow their livelihoods through United Way programs.

Building on that foundation, United Way Chennai continues to expand women’s opportunities across industries and professions.

Project Thulir includes support for entrepreneurs working in public spaces, helping them develop sustainable income streams. The program provides infrastructure support, upgraded street market stalls, pushcarts, and bunk shops, which are container-based kiosks.

Participants can receive skills-based training in trades such as tailoring and get crucial professional equipment, including tailoring and embroidery machines.

Aspiring health care professionals receive training and medical equipment kits.

In agriculture, women learn how to make products from banana fiber. The products can then be sold, earning them enough to stabilize their finances and support families.

The livelihood projects provided:
• 71 tailoring machines
• 10 embroidery machines
• 5 bunk shops
• 91 push carts
• 10 flour grinders
• 10 wet grinders

By gaining new skills and earning financial independence, program participants gain greater self-confidence and regain a sense of dignity.

United Way Chennai’s holistic approach to supporting women on a pathway to financial security is a powerful reminder that, with the right support, people can transform their lives and unlock the possibilities of a brighter future.
