Advancing Women's Empowerment

See how United Way is creating pathways to education, leadership, and lasting change for women in Africa.

Across Africa, United Way initiatives are expanding economic opportunities for women and girls through skills development, mentorship and entrepreneurship.

In South Africa, United Way's Women in Leadership Summit inspires emerging leaders to embrace change, build inclusive leadership cultures, and lead with resilience in the face of global challenges. Separately, in Mpumalanga, United Way supports rural women with training and funding to establish and grow community food gardens. This initiative, part of United Way South Africa's broader food insecurity and economic empowerment strategy, helps women generate income and improve nutrition.

In Nigeria, the Elevating Girls'  Vision for the Future program empowers 100 girls with skills in goal setting, financial literacy, and self-confidence. Collaborating with influential voices -- including BellaNaija, a top social platform with 2.6 million followers -- the program inspires participants to pursue their dreams and speak boldly about empowerment, independence, and self-belief.

In Ghana, 19 young women graduated from the United Way Bakery Training program at Amoam Achiase, Kumasi. The initiative equipped participants with professional baking skills and led to the formation of a registered cooperative that is creating a pathway to sustainable economic opportunities for program participants.
