The AFL-CIO’s 2022 Death on the Job: The Latest Toll of Neglect report will be released next month, but last year’s report offers insights as well as data points. Every single day, 275 U.S. workers die from hazardous working conditions. The latest reporting shows that 5,333 U.S. workers died on the job in 2019. Another 95,000 died from occupational diseases like asthma, COPD, and cancer that year. But we know many injuries go unreported, so the numbers are likely higher.

As we wrap up National Fair Housing Month, it's important to remember that housing instability creates many vulnerabilities for individuals, families, and entire communities -- including increased risk of human trafficking.

Typically, we think of the IRS as a tax collector. But actually, the IRS is the nation’s largest administrator of anti-poverty benefits for workers and families with children. The IRS was responsible for issuing stimulus checks, and in 2021 it provided more than $700 million in child tax credits, earned income tax credits, and similar payments.

Sharing my story with United Way because I feel that current efforts to fight human trafficking have lacked a survivor-centered approach, failing to focus their efforts on the experiences of those who have lived through human trafficking.
