Community Based Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking
During the first panel, speakers provided a snapshot of the extensive work that’s already underway, ranging from law enforcement, survivor engagement and private sector partnerships. Conclusively, to scale efforts, approaches must be multi-pronged, including all actors by building resilience through a movement, leveraging our current assets, and working collaboratively with the private sector to make this issue a priority. As Ma. Cecelia Flores-Oebanda, Voice of the Free, pointed out, ‘The enemy is always innovating’, stressing the importance of implementing adaptable solutions.

Innovations in Technology: New Initiatives to Combat Trafficking
The second panel gave us an insight into how technology and innovation are enabling us to grow anti-human trafficking efforts. Through blockchain, survivors of trafficking will now have access to their original contracts, enhancing transparency and reducing risks of them being exploited. Furthermore, big data and AI can assist law enforcement in mapping trafficking routes and detecting suspicious activity, that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Sectoral Approach: How Companies and Industries are Addressing Anti-Trafficking
Panelists from the third session uncovered the complexity of tracking supply chains and monetary transactions in a discussion around how industries are addressing anti-trafficking. Thus far, US- and Europe-based corporates have been more proactive in addressing this issue, where there is deeper trust between the NPO and private sector than in other regions. Consequently, for nonprofits and researchers to carry out their work effectively, we must cultivate trust across sectors, garner support from financial institutions, and use technology to break down silos.
