United Way Worldwide Collecting Donations for Chile Earthquake Recovery and Rebuilding Efforts

Text CHILE to 864833 to Have a One-Time $10 Donation Added to Your Mobile Phone Bill

Alexandria, VAUnited Way Worldwide announced today that it is now accepting donations by text message to support long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives and infrastructure devastated by the earthquake in Chile on February 27, 2010. United Way Worldwide is using industry-leading Mobile Accord and the mGive Foundation to power the text donation program. Text message campaigns powered by Mobile Accord and mGive on behalf of nonprofits responding to the Haiti earthquake raised more than $38 million since the earthquake struck there on January 12, 2010.

Long after first responders move on, United Way remains as a member of the community, mobilizing the caring power of people. United Way knows that one's fate is tied to the fate of others and that society as a whole benefits from improvements in quality of life. Our success at preparing for, responding to and recovering from disasters fortifies our goals in education, income and health.

"Disaster work is local. It always has been and always will be. We are working with our local United Way in Chile, Corporacion Sociedad Activa, to assess the needs in the communities affected by this earthquake. The volunteers and staff on the ground will engage real people in identifying appropriate solutions," said Teresa Hall Bartels, Senior Vice President, International Network United Way Worldwide. "At United Way Worldwide, we are committed to supporting our Network Partners' communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from crises. We want to assure that the rebuilding process is comprehensive, particularly in the areas of education, income and health," said Hall Bartels.

The United Way Worldwide network has vast experience in disaster recovery and represents nearly 1,800 community-based organizations in 45 countries and territories and mobilizes more than 2.5 million volunteers annually.

"United Way Worldwide is a long-time and valued mGive client. We are proud to assist them with their much needed recovery and rebuilding efforts surrounding the tragedy in Chile," said Tony Aiello, Co-Founder and CEO of mGive.com.

Mobile phone users can help people affected by the earthquake in Chile by simply texting CHILE to 864833 (UNITED) to give a one-time $10 donation. When prompted, mobile donors should reply with YES to confirm the one-time gift. The $10 one-time donation will appear on the donor's next mobile bill. Standard text messaging rates will apply. All donations are tax deductible and receipts can be printed at mGive.org/receipt.
