RACINE COUNTY — Jan. 27 marks the 11th anniversary of EITC Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to increase awareness about earned income tax credit (EITC) and free tax preparation sites. This year, the IRS is promoting EITC and providing information on other refundable tax credits. This includes the American Opportunity Tax Credit, child tax credit and the additional child tax credit.
United Way of Racine County is celebrating this day by kicking off its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA is a national program staffed by local volunteers to provide free preparation and electronic filing of tax returns.
The VITA friends and family event will take place on EITC Awareness Day from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Racine County Workforce Solutions, 1717 Taylor Ave.
Racine County residents with an annual household income of $54,000 or less may qualify for free tax preparation and electronic filing through VITA. Eligible Racine County residents are invited to attend the VITA friends and family event. This will be the only day during the tax season that appointments will not be required to receive VITA services. Attendees will be served on a first-come basis.
Attendees should bring:
A valid driver’s license or photo ID
Social Security or ITIN cards for all listed on the tax return
Birthdates for all listed on the tax return
All income statement forms: W-2, 1099, etc.
All records of expenses such as tuition, mortgage interest or real estate taxes
Copies of last year’s state and federal returns
Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit
