ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Hundreds of volunteers come together for a day of service in the Southern Tier.

The United Way of the Southern Tier's Day of Caring is an annual effort to improve the community.

Teams from local businesses and organizations lent a hand with projects ranging from painting to cleanup.

Dunn Field was one of the locations spruced up Friday.

Officials said the projects help meet a constant need in the community, and they said the strong turnout reflects a big commitment among neighbors to give back.

"This year we have nearly 400 volunteers over the two counties of Steuben and Chemung working on behalf of a variety of community based projects all under the name of the United Way," United Way of the Southern Tier President Stephen Hughes said. "That feels really good for us and we hope feels really good for them."

Other projects included a cleanup at Catholic Charities and organizing the warehouses of Pro Action of Steuben and Yates.
