As one of the nation’s largest health insurers, Centene provides nearly 1 in 15 Americans with affordable coverage under Medicaid, Medicare, and TRICARE programs, and through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The company’s presence in all 50 states makes it an ideal partner for United Way because no matter where employees give, their contributions stay local. Every year, Centene hosts an annual giving campaign with United Way. Whether employees live in St. Louis, Sacramento, New York, or anywhere else across Centene’s national network, the funds they raise go towards supporting charities in their local neighborhoods.

Centene’s core values closely align with United Way’s mission to advance the common good and create a better society for all. An essential piece of Centene’s corporate philosophy is a commitment to health equity and holistic solutions that help families and individuals get well, stay well, and be well. The company works to address housing instability, education, employment, access to transportation, and other social determinants of health through its partnership with United Way.

“The United Way campaign is Centene’s biggest charitable mission from one end of the calendar year to the other,” said Chris Koster, Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel. “Everyone’s contribution stays in the community where they live and work.”

Michael Neidorff, Centene’s former Chairman, President, and CEO, put it this way at the launch of the company's 2019 campaign: “Giants have to be leaders. We have to demonstrate to the city, the community, and the nation at large just what we do. I’ve been so proud to watch how United Way has grown within our company.”

Some 93 of Centene’s state health plans are involved with local United Ways across the nation. The organization’s support of United Way has only increased in the wake of the recent health crisis. In California, Centene subsidiary Health Net helped establish a COVID-19 relief fund with the United Way of Tulare County. In New Hampshire, NH Healthy Families donated COVID-19 relief funds to Granite United Way and sent more than 300 toiletry kits to community organizations.

In April 2021, The Centene Charitable Foundation sponsored the expansion of the Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, providing access to free or discounted rides to COVID-19 vaccination sites in select cities, in partnership with Lyft.
