United Way India: Bridge Over Troubled Water

Beginning in May 2022, deadly floods hit Northeastern India. Since then, United Way India has been at the forefront of helping communities recover from the devastating impacts of flooding across various regions, including Assam and Uttarakhand. These floods have affected millions, causing widespread destruction, displacing families, and disrupting the very fabric of community life. Through innovative interventions, United Way India has not only provided immediate relief but also laid the groundwork for sustainable recovery and resilience.

In Assam's Barpeta District, over 1.6 million people faced the fury of floods that damaged homes, croplands, and schools. United Way India's comprehensive response included rebuilding homes, ensuring access to safe drinking water, and restoring educational services. The rebuilding of Kharbali Lower Primary School, which now serves as a shelter during emergencies, is a prime example of their commitment to both education and disaster preparedness. Sufiya and her family, residents of the area, benefited from the initiative, receiving support to rebuild their home and livelihood. This initiative reached 614 individuals with hygiene awareness sessions, supported 230 small farmers with seeds and fencing, and provided 281 farmers with essential farm equipment.

In Kaziranga, known for its annual flooding challenges, United Way India introduced 20 rescue boats, constructed large cattle-proof sheds, and created highlands for livestock safety. These efforts were complemented by veterinary camps ensuring the health of over 5,000 animals and the introduction of Bhot Jolokia cultivation and fishponds to boost the economy. The Community Weaving Centre, promoting traditional weaving, illustrates the holistic approach taken to empower communities, particularly women. This project directly benefited 10,000 individuals and 5,000 livestock, fostering a sense of ownership and sustainability among the villagers.

Uttarakhand's crisis in 2023 saw United Way India distributing Flood Relief Ration Kits to over 2,150 households in remote villages through the Swahar initiative, a program to bring food security and a health program to mothers and children through millet-based nutrition interventions. Pravesh Uniyal, a key figure in the relief efforts, highlighted the importance of these kits in providing food security to families cut off by landslides and floods. The initiative's success was made possible by the dedication of local volunteers and strategic partnerships.

These stories of resilience, recovery, and empowerment highlight United Way India's significant impact in disaster-stricken areas. The organization's interventions have not only addressed immediate needs but have also contributed to the long-term sustainability and resilience of communities. The projects in Assam and Uttarakhand exemplify a model of community-driven disaster management, showcasing how strategic interventions, coupled with community engagement, can transform the face of disaster response.
