United Way recognizes Deloitte for contributing skills-based volunteering and pro bono work to impro

United Way Worldwide recently honored Deloitte with two Summit awards for volunteer engagement and community impact in education. The organization was recognized for its dedication to increasing high school graduation and building a college-going culture in America, in large part by contributing its people’s professional skills and knowledge to serve nonprofits through skills-based volunteering and pro bono work.

“We’re grateful for Deloitte’s continued leadership and longstanding support. They’ve been instrumental in driving progress in education, corporate philanthropy and volunteer engagement,” said Brian Gallagher, United Way Worldwide president and CEO. “The organization’s strong culture of service, innovative thinking, and unwavering commitment to strengthening communities is making a real impact.”

In 2011, Deloitte raised $21 million through its annual United Way campaign, which brought its cumulative campaign total to more than $200 million. Notably, for the past 10 consecutive years, Deloitte has also led the nation in Tocqueville Society members (individuals giving $10,000+ to United Way) and now, with 900+, has nearly twice as many Tocqueville donors as any other company in America, earning United Way’s prestigious Fleur de Lis award in acknowledgement of the accomplishment.

“United Way has been a major part of Deloitte’s commitment to the community for more than 25 years,” said Barry Salzberg, Global Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, who earlier this month was elected to a two-year term as chairman of the board of directors of United Way Worldwide. “It’s a privilege to help advance our shared goals and this recognition is an indication our efforts are making a difference.”

The centerpiece of Deloitte’s community involvement program is its deep commitment to pro bono work, which assists nonprofits in building their capacity. The organization has pledged $110 million in pro bono work to leading nonprofits, and to date, has contributed work to more than 300 nonprofits, including several projects that address mission-critical business issues for leading education organizations. Further, on IMPACT Day, Deloitte’s annual national day of volunteer service, approximately three-quarters of Deloitte’s 50,000+ professionals volunteer their time and talent.

Additionally, Deloitte’s community impact extends to thought leadership; it conducts the annual Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT survey to spark advances in corporate philanthropy and volunteering, and offers it free of charge as a public service. The 2011 survey revealed millennials who frequently participate in workplace volunteer activities are more likely to be proud, loyal, satisfied employees.

The Spirit of America and Summit Awards program, celebrating its 25th year, is United Way’s highest national honor for corporate citizenship, recognizing United Way Global Corporate Leaders with the most comprehensive commitments to strengthening communities. Applicants are evaluated by corporate peers and local United Ways. Join the conversation on Twitter by using hash tag #SpiritofAmerica or visit unitedway.org/SOA.
