A One-Stop Shop for Veterans Services

Throughout our nation’s history, a brave few have always stepped up to make great personal sacrifices on behalf of us all. Now it’s our responsibility to ensure these heroes return home to lives full of opportunity. This week, United Way of Broward County marks Veterans Day by opening the doors of the new Jean and David Colker Center, where veterans and their families will benefit from housing, employment, education, emergency financial aid, legal and health services—all under one roof.

The new center is the latest action taken by MISSION UNITED, United Way of Broward County’s initiative to help veterans re-acclimate to civilian life. Since 2013, MISSION UNITED has provided assistance to more than 2,000 veterans in Broward County, Florida—people like Francisco and Dennis, two patriots who faced serious challenges when they returned home from serving their country, and found the support they needed from a grateful community.

Meet Francisco and Dennis

Today is a special day to honor veterans like Francisco and Dennis, but the mission to support them continues year-round, thanks in no small part to volunteers. And it’s expanding: in Orlando, Heart of Florida United Way is already replicating the MISSION UNITED initiative. Meanwhile, around 50 other United Ways across the country are exploring how they can bring the initiative to their communities.

Want to make a difference in the lives of veterans in your community? Contact your local United Way to find out how you can volunteer, perhaps with 2-1-1, a nationwide helpline and website that connects people (including many veterans) to essential services and resources. Last year alone, our 2-1-1 agents answered more than 15 million calls. With your help, we can reach even more people, and change more lives for the better.
