It’s Tax Day—ADVOCATE!
Tax Day, April 17, is a great opportunity to advocate for United Way's network tax policy priorities. Advocacy for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program are crucial to ensuring every person in every community is financially stable.
Working Tax Credits
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is one of the most effective tools we have for working families to keep their heads above water. Each year, it lifts about 6 million Americans out of poverty. Only those who work are eligible, and recipients use the EITC for reliable transportation to work, groceries, and quality childcare. Tell your representatives just how important this critical working tax credit is for your community.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program
Over 380 United Ways fund, operate, or support VITA sites across the country. During the 2017 filing season, thousands of VITA volunteers prepared millions of tax returns nationwide resulting in more than $1.9 billion returning to local communities – dollars spent to cover child expenses, pay bills, purchase groceries and household necessities, as well as to save for the future. Tax season, and in particular Tax Day, is the perfect time to educate lawmakers about VITA sites in their district.
