Wells Fargo honored for #1 United Way campaign and volunteer engagement

April 18, 2013 – United Way Worldwide, the country’s largest privately funded nonprofit, today recognized Wells Fargo with a Summit award for volunteer engagement. Wells Fargo is also recognized for having the largest workplace giving campaign in the U.S. for four years in a row. Wells Fargo team members placed  #1 by raising $60.7 million through Wells Fargo’s annual Community Support and United Way Campaign in 2012 — a 23% increase over 2011—resulting in over $75.3 million when combined with the corporate gift.

“Wells Fargo’s leadership and investment in communities are outstanding,” said Brian Gallagher, United Way Worldwide president and CEO. “Through giving, skilled volunteering and collaborative partnerships, Wells Fargo and its team members are improving the long-term economic stability of families throughout the U.S.”

Wells Fargo team members volunteered 1.5 million hours in 2012, plus the company offers a unique Volunteer Leave Program which awarded fully paid leave to more than 21 team members last year to work on a significant nonprofit project for up to four months. The company has 82 Volunteer Chapters supporting 32 states and two countries outside the U.S. Wells Fargo also promotes significant skilled volunteering through its free Hands on Banking® program, focused on money management, in both English and Spanish.

In 2012, Wells Fargo also announced a new five-year, $5 million national partnership with United Way to provide financial counseling and access to education and resources to low- to moderate-income households. The goal is to help individuals and families learn to track and manage spending and plan for the future.

“Wells Fargo is committed to finding local solutions for local needs in communities around the country. These generous gifts from our team members play a vital role in helping us strengthen our communities,” said Jon Campbell, head of Government and Community Relations at Wells Fargo. “We’re honored by this recognition and proud of our long-standing partnership with United Way.”

United Way also presented awards to 3M, Comcast Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Bank of America, General Motors and The Mosaic Company. The Spirit of America and Summit Awards program is United Way’s highest national honor for a corporation, recognizing outstanding United Way Global Corporate Leaders.
