United Way Worldwide Appoints Mary B. Sellers as U.S. President

Alexandria, VA (April 5, 2017) – United Way Worldwide has appointed Mary B. Sellers as United Way Worldwide’s U.S. President. Ms. Sellers currently serves as President and CEO of United Way of Central Iowa. She will assume her new role at United Way Worldwide in May.

Ms. Sellers will be responsible for leading the organization’s strategy implementation across the United States by working with United Way leaders in local communities to execute against a vision of “one network” that, combined with a consistent set of impact goals, create the future success of communities across the world.

“As CEO of United Way of Central Iowa, Mary has been leading one of the most successful United Ways in the country. She’s ahead of the curve on donor engagement and has built bridges across the community with established impact partners and non-traditional funders,” said Brian A. Gallagher, President and CEO, United Way Worldwide. “I know Mary as a leader with the ability to implement strategy and build collective will around common goals. She is skilled at working with broad networks and partnering with volunteers, community leaders and donors.”

Ms. Sellers has more than 25 years in leadership roles in the non-profit sector, including over 15 years of CEO experience.  Prior to United Way, Ms. Sellers held leadership and governance roles in the museum field.  In those roles, Ms. Sellers learned the importance of maximizing membership networks, a skill critical to effectively leading a network of over 1,200 local United Ways throughout the U.S.

Ms. Sellers holds a B.S. in Public Relations from the University of Florida, and an M.B.A from University of Iowa. Ms. Sellers has completed professional education programs at Harvard University and The Getty Leadership Institute for Museum Management. Since 2013, Ms. Sellers has served on the Executive Committee of the United Way Worldwide National Professional Council.

Ms. Sellers serves in an appointed capacity on the Iowa Technology and Telecommunications Commission and Future Ready Iowa. She has served in a range of advisory roles within the museum, education and diversity space further demonstrating her commitment to community impact.
