United Way Worldwide, the world’s largest privately funded nonprofit, today elected Mary Ellen Garrett, Senior Vice President, Investments at Merrill Lynch, as an at-large trustee to support the organization’s U.S. movement over the next three years.

“Mary Ellen brings extensive financial investment expertise and a strong commitment for community change to United Way,” said Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way Worldwide.

Garrett accepted the nomination to the U.S.A. Board of Trustees and looks forward to lending her expertise to the national network. She previously served as a board member for United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. United Way advances the common good by focusing on improving education, helping people achieve financial stability, and promoting healthy lives by mobilizing millions of people to give, advocate, and volunteer to improve the conditions in which they live.

Garrett first joined Merrill Lynch in 1983, taking on varied roles, including Divisional Manager, Vice President of the Estate Planning Division, as well as regional Manager of the Direct Investment Group of the Southeast Region. Currently, she provides wealth management services for individuals and corporations.

Garrett currently serves on the Financial Advisory Council for the Atlanta Catholic Archdiocese; the Philanthropic Council for the Atlanta Community Foundation; the Board of St. Joseph’s Mercy Foundation; Board of Councilors, The Carter Center; and as Philanthropic Chair for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She was a 2011 recipient of the Womenetics POW Award, and was recognized in 2009 as one of Barron’s America’s Top Advisors State-by-State.
