For many years, United Way Worldwide has sat atop Forbes’ Top Charities list, even as private donations to this network of more than 1,300 legally separate local nonprofits have been gradually sliding. On our new 22d annual list, United Way is again No. 1, but with a big difference: Alexandria, Va.-based United Way reported private donations of $3.6 billion—a 9.1% increase over the previous year’s $3.3 billion. That’s still below the $4.1 billion in United Way’s peak year of 2007, but it’s a remarkable gain considering the competition from single-cause charities, newer office-giving contribution platforms like Benevity and fast-growing donor-advised funds, which provide a tax savvy way to give to charity.
