Demand for mental, physical health support surges while nonprofits struggle to keep up

Even government partner United Way of Greater Nashville, in charge of disbursing federal funds for Nashville and the state, is expecting a 15% drop in charitable giving this year. Much of the decrease is from payroll deductions that middle-class workers can no longer provide, and the cancellation of two golf tournaments expected to generate $2 million.
The organization is now administering $10 million in housing and food help in Davidson County.
It is also disbursing $40 million in federal funds statewide in response to $80 million in requested support.
"We pumped money into the YMCA and others to provide safe childcare for emergency workers," Starling said. "Childcare was in short supply before all this. Now it's becoming a critical issue because children are being schooled remotely."
Like most organizations, United Way cut expenses and is seeking new virtual fundraising opportunities.
