Hurricane Dorian has devastated the Bahamas, causing an estimated $7 billion in damages, leaving 70,000 people homeless and resulting in the loss of at least 43 lives. Thousands of homes, hospitals, and businesses have been destroyed by the Category 5 hurricane, one of the strongest ever to hit the area. Along the coastal areas of Virginia and the Carolinas, Dorian's powerful winds and dangerous storm surges have caused serious flooding and tornadoes. In response, several local United Ways have set up disaster recovery funds to help these communities with mid- and long-term recovery. Find the details below.

United Ways of South Carolina Hurricane Dorian Recovery Fund
United Way Association of South Carolina has established a Hurricane Dorian Long-Term Recovery Fund for communities affected by the storm and flood waters. This fund will help local United Ways in South Carolina meet the storm-related needs and support mid- and long-term recovery efforts throughout the affected regions of South Carolina. All 100% of individual donations to the Dorian Recovery Fund will be distributed to local United Ways in the affected areas.

United Way of Broward County, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, has activated the United Way [of Broward County] Hurricane Dorian Fund to help with relief, rebuilding and recovery efforts. All 100% of all donations will go directly to supporting response efforts in the Bahamas and other affected areas.

United Way of Miami-Dade, the Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald and Univision 23 have activated Operation Helping Hands, to help with relief, rebuilding and recovery efforts. All 100% of all donations to Operation Helping Hands will go directly to support response efforts in the Bahamas and other affected areas.

United Way of Palm Beach County Hurricane Dorian Relief Fund
United Way of Palm Beach County is collaborating with United Way of Miami-Dade, United Way of Broward County, United Way of the Turks and Caicos, and the Bahamian government to assist with Hurricane Dorian recovery efforts. Funds raised will be used to meet storm-related needs and support mid- and long-term recovery efforts in the Bahamas, and to help evacuate people from the Bahamas to Florida communities. All 100% of donations will go directly towards recovery efforts.
