The war in Ukraine has been one of the largest refugee crises in the world. In its first year, the war forced some 8M people out of their homeland. And more than 7M people were displaced inside Ukraine, according to the United Nations. For all 15M people -- many of whom are women and children -- rebuilding a new life in a new community or country is still a significant challenge.
In the first six months of the war, United Way and its partners in Hungary, Romania, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain gave life-changing help to 131,249 refugees. Our United for Ukraine Fund raised $4.2M during that time. Of every dollar raised, 95 cents went to on-the-ground partners, while 5 cents helped United Way vet recipients, track and measure impact.
On March 31, 2023, United Way Worldwide closed the United for Ukraine Fund to additional donations. But that does not mean that United Way’s support to Ukrainian refugees has ended. United Way Romania, United Way Hungary, PHINEO/United Way Germany, United Way Netherlands, United Way Spain and our partner in Poland, Fundacja Dobrych Inicjatyw, continue to work in innovative ways -- with partners and those who’ve been displaced by the war – to help refugees rebuild their lives.
