How to Address Rights Violations as a Renter

Tenant law is state or local law. If you feel that your rights as a renter have been violated follow these general steps:

Step 1: Keep Records

Keep a written record of all actions, conversations and events that you feel have violated your rights.

Step 2: Talk to Your Landlord

Talking to your landlord may resolve the issue.  Calmly explain the problem and ask him/her to address it. The landlord may not know that he/she is in the wrong and may be willing to resolve the situation.

Step 3: Put it in Writing

If the conversation with your landlord does not create a resolution, then put your complaints in a formal letter to your landlord, clearly explaining what went wrong and what type of solution you are hoping for.

Step 4: Get Advice

Many communities have housing counseling centers or legal aid offices that offer free advice.  If your letter goes unanswered, seek out help from one of these resources.
