How to Get Unauthorized Credit Card Charges Reversed
Follow these steps if you think that your credit card has been used without your permission:
Step 1: Act Quickly
If you notice a credit card transaction that you do not recognize, contact the credit card issuer immediately. You must make the report within 60 days of receiving your bill, and you should call first (take notes!) then follow up with a letter sent certified mail/return receipt requested. If someone uses your credit card fraudulently, you may only be responsible for $50 of the charge as long as you report it. Some credit card issuers will waive the $50.
Step 2: Wait for a Response
The credit card company has 90 days to respond to your report. In the meantime, pay the rest of your bill.
Step 3: Ask for a New Credit Card
To be on the safe side, request a new credit card number to prevent any further unapproved charges to this account. You can do this when you first call to report the unauthorized charges.
Step 4: Set up a Fraud Alert
To further insure that the identity thief hasn't stolen more than your bank account information, set up a fraud alert with the three credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, Trans Union).
