In Hungary each week five children are killed in avoidable accidents, and more than 460 children visit a hospital. In 2010, United Way Hungary launched its flagship program – Safety School – in hopes of educating children and their caretakers on how to prevent accidents before they occur. So far one school has engaged in the pilot project and more than 100 children took part in preventive and educational courses. The post-tests showed a 15% awareness raising and positive outcome of the program. The vision is to take this provide this program to all children in Hungary with particular attention to helping disadvantaged areas. With a focus on prevention, children’s lives are saved and serious life-altering injuries are prevented.
