To promote the importance of summer reading United Way Hungary launched a literacy initiative which ended on the Day Of Action, the 21st of June. Our objective was to collect 2500 gently used children’s books and donate them to children’s groups of mainly dispriviledged children. The initiative had two parts: we started with a corporate employee donation part involving 9 corporate partners and added a closing event to it, which was designed for the public and enabled attendees to donate books as well as to swap them. At corporate partners including Citi Hungary, Budapest Bank (GE Money), PWC , Lexmark and Celanese nearly 3200 corporate employees were called to action and more than 2000 individuals got engaged and donated 4102 books. Nearly 1000 attendees joined our event on the Day of Action, 8 volunteers helped our work and spent more than 100 volunteer hours on the project. So far we have distributed nearly 1600 children’s books, through 5 primary schools and 2 orphanages.
