United Way of Mumbai has been the official charity partner of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon for the past three years. The Marathon raises funds for charity and has consistently increased the number of participants and fundraising totals. This year, the event raised a total of Rs 121.6 million ($ 2.74 million) in its eighth edition benefiting of 131 NGOs.
This event also showcases United Way of Mumbai’s ability to mobilize volunteers. This year, over a 100 student volunteers drawn from various city colleges helped in organizing fund raising workshops, assisting in campaigns and in the race day activities. Each volunteer gave of his or her time to help raise awareness for the NGO sector and in doing so elevated the condition of Mumbai-area residents.
The Marathon also acts a platform to encourage the idea of giving and civic participation, removing barriers and helps build community spirit. United Way of Mumbai created an easy-to-use fundraising model which provides avenues for people from all walks of life to raise funds for their preferred charity. NGOs working across the philanthropy spectrum effectively use the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon as a platform to raise awareness for their respective causes and raise funds for their projects. There is enthusiastic participation by corporations and their employees, NGOs and the general public.
