Using Online Tools to Manage Your Checking Account

Bill Pay

You can then go into the Bill Pay system, order a payment and the date you want it sent, and the bank will send it from your account on your behalf, giving you a confirmation code that the transaction has been made.  With bill paying service, you can enter the names, addresses and account numbers for bills that you pay on a regular basis.  This is extremely helpful for bills like rent or insurance, which are due for the same amount on the same day each month.

Be sure you set the transaction to go through two days before the payment is due to make sure you are not late.

Budgeting

Some online banking will allow you to categorize your spending so that you know how much money you are spending on groceries, gas, utilities, rent, and other spending categories to help you to track your spending and manage your budget.

Goals

If you have a savings goal for a particular purchase, some mobile applications (apps) and online tools will allow you to direct a certain sum to a virtual sub-account each month until your goal has been achieved.  Be aware, however, as some of these are linked with sites that sell products.  The savings goals are linked to thinks you can get through an online purchase.

Mobile Apps

Apps for your smartphone can help you to keep on top of you balances and make deposits by taking a picture of your check.
