Why Getting a D Helped Change My Life

Miss Griffith was the most influential teacher I had in high school. Where every other teacher gave me As all the time (no question), Miss Griffith gave me a D on my first paper. She was incredibly smart and had formerly taught college-level. She came to our high school and helped me think strategically, better organize my arguments and write better than before. She taught us incredibly challenging subjects, beyond the normal 10th grade level work, including Handel's Messiah and difficult areas of Shakespeare (not the normal fluff). She believed we could do better, and many of us rose to the challenge. She also took time to have us over to her house for dinner! I've written professionally for 15 years now and want to thank her for the influence she had on my life.
