The Importance of Learning

Long ago, in a land called school, I had a fabulous teacher. Now, I hate to choose one, but I will- let me say, I've had my share of dedicated teachers throughout my education. But, Mrs. Oltman, she was special. Fifth Grade science was an ordinary topic until I was introduced to the essence of learning and what good it can do me in my future. Yes, fifth grade is a young age to have an awe-inspired moment, but I did. Mrs. Oltman took the time to teach every single student all the topics and make sure they knew them like the back of their palms. Even the students who didn't exactly favor science were lured into the amazing facts and processes she taught us about. Well, one day Mrs. Oltman explained to me that the Marianas Trench was one of the greatest depths of the ocean floor that is known to man kind. I was perplexed; if it was so deep and mysterious, how could some minute humans discover it and know so much about it? Well, Mrs. Oltman explained to me that with education, I would soon know. She explained to me that it was essential to attend college and that I must cherish the public education that some will never have. She also told me I was going to go somewhere when I was older. Since then, I've kept her sage words in minds as I accomplish my goals. I joined the United Way to promote education, because I now know that it is a great opportunity for life and is just something that all students should have a shot at. Wherever you are Mrs. Oltman, I write this story to say this: thank you- for everything.
