Teacher with a Heart of Gold
I had a hard time in school. I was bullied very badly. In fact, I hated school. I never learned anything anyway. The whole day consisted of getting made fun of and dodging the next "bullet." My previous teacher didn't care and nor did the principal at the time. In fact, my previous teacher contributed to making fun of me. I went into fourth grade leaving behind a horrible year of getting made fun of, passing by the skin of my teeth (I still can't believe I passed that year) and no friends. I came home from school everyday crying. I was miserable.
This year would be more difficult as I had another tough burden on my shoulders that I was dealing with that only a few people knew about. My fourth grade teacher Mrs. Cassel stepped up to the plate. It was a huge class that year as there was only one class. She made it very clear that she would not tolerate this non sense in her class and looked after me. It turned out that becasue of this although it was a tough year dealing with serious problems, it was my best year academically. I loved school that year, I loved my teacher and even made a few friends. I came super close to getting honor roll and I won the principals fork award and was principal for a day. Mrs. Cassel
encouraged me to enter the contest. It was because of her that I made it through 4th grade. She changed my life. I still see her as she still teaches 4th grade 20 years later. My daughter is in 1st grade and I pray she gets Mrs. Cassel for 4th grade. Hats off to you Mrs. Cassel as you are an inspiration to others!
