Mrs. Bailey
My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Bailey changed my life by recognizing and encouraging my creativity. One day, I came to school excited about seeing the Bolshoi Ballet the night before and told my class about it during our morning sharing time. Mrs. Bailey then moved my desk away from the others so I could look out the window. She gave me paper and a box of pastels and told me to draw what I remembered and to take as long as I liked. This simple act made me feel known, understood and encouraged. Before 4th grade, I always did well in school, but was consistently told I shouldn't "daydream". The fact that Mrs. Bailey gave me time, space and "broke the roles" to excuse me from other work to be creative has stayed with me my whole life. Thank you Mrs. Bailey!
