“Mr. Holland” Isn’t Just in Hollywood

I graduated high school in 1973 and often think about my "Mr. Holland"...the teacher who believed in each one of his art students to reach their greatest potential. His real name is Ken Hoover who taught art classes at L'Anse Creuse High School in Michigan until his retirement. If there is one lesson he taught us all...through our art...was that everything, no matter how bad, had possibilities. Although he used art as his way of defining his words, nearly 40 years later...and throughout much of my life...I've realized that he wasn't talking about art. He was talking about life. Even during the darkest, most challenging times, I've been able to step back, look at the entire "picture" and find even the smallest possibility of something good. As my two teen daughters are growing, I've repeated the words he once used with me and they are vibrant, smart and happy. Thank you Mr. Hoover for a lifelong vision of optimism!
