Inspiring Civic Duty and Activism
When I was a sophomore in high school, my history teacher, Mr. Reynolds, offered significant extra credit to students who volunteered on political campaigns. He assigned us to read the platforms of several political parties to figure out which one we most identified with. It was during the election period where Al Gore eventually lost to George Bush. My friend and I connected with our town democratic committee. We were the first two student members in the state of Massachusetts, and we coordinated the No on 4 and 6 campaign in our town. I learned about the importance of voting and making your voice heard, and I learned how I could work for change. The political experience on my resume helped me get a competitive internship after my first year of college, which led to my current stable nonprofit position.
