Education Matters Your Entire Life

I have been working on my Bachelor's Degree at Bowling Green State University since the spring semester of 2006. I started that spring semester with two courses one in political science and the other in environmental science.

The next semester in the fall of 2006 I increased my course selection by one more class. By the spring semester 2007 I began the journey in full time courses with a declared major in environmental policy and analysis.

Now I am a senior and will be on stage in May 2011 with a bouquet of red ballons because I have just applied for graduation and am about to realize my dream.

I have a chronic illness which was diagnosed in 2000. After countless companies refusing to recognize my contributions as an excellent employee who had some minor adjustments due to this illness I choose to get a degree and focus on my dreams. It has been one of the most challenging endeavors I have ever attempted and have been successful with working part time at the university.

If I were to pick out who influenced me the most it would be both my former advisor in environmental science and a woman who spent time one on one with me to teach me to write academically. Both of these women have contributed countless hours to insuring that I receive my education through their dedication to the field of education and excellence.

Donna Nelson-Beene, PhD is the director of the general studies writing program at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Holly Myers, PhD was my advisor in environmental science policy & analysis as well as my instructor in environmental justice and another course in environmental planning.

In February 2010 my mom took ill with mild dementia. We fought tooth and nail with the help of two attorney's so that I could be appointed as her conservator and medical guardian. I now devote most of my time and energy to caring for her at her home in another state. My last two semesters at college have been as 100% web based learning and I intend to succeed and be on stage in May 2011 accepting my degree.
