Casting a Ray of Light on the Outcasts
Our school is considered to be one of the best public high schools in my hometown Banjarmasin, South Borneo. But that was not the case with my homeroom class. We were a bunch of kids whom most of the teachers found "challenging" to say the least. It was the class of naughty, weird, and not-so-bright kids. To make it short, it was the homeroom of outcasts. Our own homeroom teacher called us "Kauravas" (referring to the villains of Mahabharata epic), reflecting her disdain.
One day, a man came to our class. He was a freelance art teacher who'd only teach us for a short time. Instead of giving us theories, he brought his guitar and asked us to sing along. He brought happiness in our classroom, and the kids felt acceptance, something we couldn't get from the other teachers.
And then a time of class meeting (where students from different homerooms would compete in various events). We were not that good in academics, and sports were really not our thing either. But we competed in the vocal group competition, and actually won it!
It was such a sad thing that he had to leave, as his position was only temporary. But to this day, I am very thankful to him. He has proven that children can do amazing things if you put your faith in them.
