A Little Encouragement Goes a Long Way

I had been a straight A student until the eight grade when I decided that other things were much more important than school work. I continued with this attitude when we moved to yet another new place at the beginning of my freshman year in high school. At the end of the first quarter, my English and homeroom teacher, Ms. Brown, took me aside one day and told me that my report card did not reflect the ability that she saw in me. I had an A in her class but had Cs in Science and Social Studies. She told me that she knew I could do better and that if I wanted to go to the college of my choice, I needed to work harder in those other subjects. I honestly hadn't even thought about college and how the decisions I was making at the time would affect my future. With her encouragement, I finished the year on the honor roll and even became a member of the National Honor Society. I went to the colleges of my choice and excelled. As a result, I now have a successful, satisfying career. This all happened because Ms. Brown recognized my potential and encouraged me to always do my best.
