Deloitte Maximum Impact Alternative Spring Break with United Way
Deloitte and United Way ASB in Miami, FL
Together, Deloitte and United Way hosted a weeklong Alternative Spring Break in Miami, FL from March 10-15. Forty-eight students and over a dozen Deloitte professionals joined forces to tackle education issues faced by students in at-risk communities. Projects included renovating the rooms in a shelter for children, developing new curricula for community agencies, mentoring students and teaching them how to make presentations, and serving as readers, tutors and mentors to set kids on a path to one day attend college.
Hundreds of students applied to join us in Miami, but only top candidates from across the country were selected. The calibur of students on the ground was clear when on day one our students renovating bedrooms at the children's shelter realized the need at the organization was greater than what their budget allowed. To meet the challenge, they developed a professional proposal to United Way and Deloitte leadership for additional funding and delivered a heartfelt presentation to double their budget to do more work. With zero hesitation, their proposal was approved and these empowered students put every penny to great use.
Volunteering along side the many college students was Calais Campbell, Defensive End for the Arizona Cardinals and Team NFL all star recruiter. On Sunday he delivered the key note address, encouraging our students to set goals and overcome barriers in their personal and professional lives. On Monday, he joined the team at the Boys & Girls Club of Miami Dade to spend some time with an awesome group of elementary school students to encourage them to live healthy lifestyles and stay in school.
