United Way National Alternative Spring Break
Stay Tune for 2013 Alternative Spring Break
During spring break, hundreds of student volunteers from across the United States trade swim trunks for tool belts and team up with United Way to make a meaningful impact in communities across the country. For more than seven years, through a unique collaboration between United Way and Deloitte, more than 2,500 students have given back during their spring break in dozens of communities across the country, contributing more than 77,000 hours of volunteer service. In 2011 alone, nearly 500 students provided 13,500 hours of service valued at over $288, 300.
This past year, 58 students from 30 colleges in 23 states arrived in South Mississippi to spend the week serving with local agencies that included Boys and Girls Clubs, Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Youth Build, Salvation Army, Hope CDA, and the Land Trust of Gulf Coast Mississippi. Over the week, participants tutored elementary students, rebuilt homes damaged by Katrina, created accessible nature trails and contributed 2,900 volunteers hours over the course of the week donating $62,000 worth of hard work back to the community.
