United Way Worldwide President and CEO Receives Recognition for Nonprofit Leadership

Brian Gallagher listed on The NonProfit Times’ 2013 Power and Influence Top 50 and The Hill’s 100 People to Watch in the Fall

[Alexandria, Va.] – Two distinguished publications, The NonProfit Times and The Hill, recently recognized Brian Gallagher, president and CEO, United Way Worldwide, for his leadership in the nonprofit industry. The NonProfit Times named Gallagher to its 2013 Power and Influence Top 50 list for the 11th year running, and The Hill included Gallagher in its list of 100 People to Watch in the Fall due to his influence on Capitol Hill.

This year, The NonProfit Times recognized Gallagher on its annual list for leveraging United Way Worldwide’s relationships across business sectors and unions to expand the organization’s purview. Today the world’s largest privately-funded nonprofit is facilitating partnerships and programming focused on improving education, financial stability and health in communities where it previously served only as a fundraising organization. Gallagher was included in The Hill’s list because of his dedication to protecting the charitable tax deduction from being cut through tax reform.

Gallagher has committed his 32-year career to United Way Worldwide’s mission of advancing the common good. He first joined United Way in 1981 as a management trainee, and went on to hold positions in several communities. In 2002 when Gallagher became president and CEO, he championed a new mission for the organization where success was measured not in dollars raised, but in actual lives changed. His goal was to transform United Way Worldwide into a driver of community impact, bringing people and organizations together around a common vision and strategy to fuel collective success, strengthen communities and create lasting change.

United Way Worldwide now focuses on education, income and health because the organization believes they are the building blocks for a good quality of life. United Way Worldwide has a presence in 41 countries and territories, including nearly 1,200 local organizations in the United States. In 2010, United Way Worldwide was the only nonprofit to make Forbes’ “World’s Most Valuable Brands,” and in 2012 Forbes included the organization in its list of top five “All-Star Charities.” During Gallagher’s tenure as president and CEO, United Way Worldwide has also consistently topped the Chronicle of Philanthropy list of the top 400 fund-raising groups.
