Share your story >> | | Ian Nagy Big Rapids, MI I am a Junior at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI. I discovered my passion for the United Way right here at Ferris when I had the opportunity to work at our Office of Student Leadership Activities. I was placed onto the United Way team and the moment we started work, I was hooked! Our student campaign was able to raise a little over $14,000 from the students alone last year and as a whole, the university was able to raise $60,112.33. All of the proceeds were allocated to local organizations. The United Way is a vital part of our campus. Our VP of Academic and Student Affairs is a very passionate supporter of The United Way and without his enthusiasm and the compassion of our students here, I would never have had this great opportunity to truly change peoples lives, my community, and myself. Share your story >> | | Debra Kittrell Fairfield, OH I started listening to women talk about what was putting the most burden on their lives, keeping them from being the strength of their families. I had taken financial courses and I had been a stay at home mom for ten years with four children and lived on one income. The thought came to me that I had something I could share with other women to get their strength back and become the core foundation of their familes again. I started a campaign called "The Strength of A Woman" . I decided to hold a Mini Financial Workshop at our local Library free of charge for women who wanted to gain financial freedom. It was a sucess and I was asked to offer the workshop every two weeks instead of once a month and I did. Women are opening up to each other, gaining knowledge from one another and building friendships. We are women who face many of the same issues. If we don't allow ourselves to be free to talk about the issues of our lives and hearts, change will not come. I believe the only way our communities are going to change and our children and families are going to become stronger is by taking off our mask and allowing light to shine in. As long as we live in the dark we can't become free! When the ladies inform me that they feel comfortable about where they are with their finances we will tackle another issue that is breaking down the spirit of the woman and the strength of the family. This will be ongoing and anyone can join at any time.
