Dallas Cowboys - United Way of Tarrant County 2017 Character Playbook Live

CHARACTER PLAYBOOK LIVE EVENT SCORES TOUCHDOWN WITH STUDENTS

The scene was one of organized chaos this Tuesday as Workman Junior High students crowded around their computer screens, each eagerly hanging onto the words of their heroes – Byron Jones and Tyrone Crawford of the Dallas Cowboys.

The players were video chatting live with not only these students from our local Arlington community, but with middle school and junior high students from communities all across the DFW Metroplex as part of Character Playbook LIVE, an event sparked through the Character Playbook program.

The program, which launched last summer through a partnership between the NFL and United Way, features a digital curriculum that guides students through interactive, confidence-building activities that explore challenges like managing emotions, communicating effectively in relationships and resolving conflict. Most importantly, the course prepares students with safe, effective options for stepping up when a friend, family member, or fellow student needs help.

During the Character Playbook LIVE event, students were able to actually speak with their football playing heroes live to tackle some of these big issues that they face each and every day. The event featured a true or false session where the players had the students determine if statements like “Having a solid sense of who you are is the best way to make sure you are acting according to your senses of what is right and wrong,” were true or false (For the record, that’s true.) and a question and answer segment where student representatives from each school could ask the players a question.

So what happens when an NFL player video chats live with hundreds of students? IMPACT.
