2008 Leadership Summit
June 4-6 Hyatt Regency Chicago, Illinois

The 2008 Leadership Summit convened 350 United Way and strategic community leaders to address the critical role that financial stability plays in the long-term success of low to moderate income individuals, families, and communities nationwide.

The three-day event included:

  • "Financial Stability in Unstable Times," a thought-provoking panel discussion about financial stability, its importance to the health and success of our country, and what it takes to make it a reality for millions of Americans struggling in today’s economy
  • Remarks from leaders in the asset building and financial stability fields, including Senator Bill Bradley; Barbara Ehrenreich, best selling author of Nickel and Dimed; Martin Gruenberg, Vice Chairman of the FDIC; Andrew Plepler, President, Bank of America Charitable Foundation; and Josephine Robinson, Director of the Federal Office of Community Services.
  • Breakout sessions focusing on the economic issues impacting families nationwide and the tools and strategies communities can use to help them remain financially stable and continue on the road to financial independence.

Jane Addams was an early advocate for Advancing the Common Good and for strategies that help working families become financially stable, making Chicago the perfect site for the 2008 Financial Stability Summit!

In 1889, concern for the social problems among Chicago’s working class residents led Jane Addams to found Hull House, which was designed to provide social, educational, and employment opportunities to lower-income workers. Over time, Hull House expanded its efforts to include systemic changes at the municipal, state, and federal levels, influencing child labor laws, occupational safety and health provisions, immigrant rights, and pension laws.
