Volunteering to educate youth with Dividendo Por Colombia

In Colombia, youth less than 18 years of age make up more than a third of the population. Of these children many enter school at lower level and older age than the average. A high percentage of these children do not complete their education. Using the slogan Ayudar a estudiar a un niño colombiano, es ayudarlo para siempre (Helping a Colombian child study is helping them for forever), Dividiendo por Colombia has focused on youth education.

Dividendo por Colombia foundation in partnership with local secretaries of education in 23 municipalities, local organizations and education experts in reading and writing skills developed a reading and writing Program, first implemented in 2004. During 2010 the program was offered in 192 educational institutions benefiting 96,100 students and 2,404 teachers.

The purpose of this program is to improve communication skills of students in elementary school through a strategy that ensures the availability of reading materials, teachers training and classroom follow-ups. This program changes communities by increasing opportunities for early learning and family engagement. Families learn to share knowledge and participate in the education of children. Teachers strengthen their pedagogical skills and enhance their classroom practices. The result is better educated children with increased reading proficiency who are more able to compete and succeed in their school and future lives.
