Volunteers Decide to Go Read Across America

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...” So writes Dr. Seuss in Oh, The Places You’ll Go. On Read Across America Day, United Way volunteers have decided where to go to read this children’s classic: local child care centers and schools, to help build a nation of readers.

Held annually in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd, Read Across America Day is part of the National Education Association’s program to motivate children and teens to read. It also is a great opportunity to mobilize volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to improve education and increase the high school graduation rate.

On Read Across America Day, about 60 volunteers with the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg will spend the morning fostering a love of learning and reading among 200 young children at seven day care centers. After reading to the children, the volunteers will help them create simple Dr. Seuss crafts. United Way Silicon Valley also celebrates Read Across America Day each year and has asked volunteers to spend an hour spreading the joy of reading to kids attending five elementary schools in East San Jose, CA.

Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of learning. By reading to children on his birthday – or any day -- we send a clear message that reading is fun and important. You can volunteer to read with children any day of the year; contact your local United Way to find out how. And in the words of Dr. Seuss, “You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So... get on your way!”
