United Way Alternative Spring Break - Extreme Agency Makeover Edition

The Student United Way of Northern Michigan University completed an extreme agency makeover at the Salvation Army Recreation Center in Gwinn, Michigan for their 2nd Annual United Way Alternative Spring Break. The group focused their projects on reading and education to support United Way’s goals to cut the number of high school dropouts in half by 2018. To do this the Student United Way teamed up with Target to create a reading corner for kids that visit the center with the goal to create a space that will help encourage the youth to read at least 30 minutes a day after school.

The Student United Way gave the center a new coat of fresh paint, added new furniture, organized books and performed a variety of other tasks to make an inviting space over the two day project.  Other local businesses also supported the students and donated food, books, paint, and other supplies. Lauren Veale, President of Student United Way of Northern Michigan was thrilled by the support, “Alternative Spring Break at the Salvation Army Recreation Center was such an inspiring experience. The community really came together for the cause and was a great example of how a community should Live United."
