Living a healthy lifestyle involves making nutritious eating choices and getting plenty of exercise. One of the primary goals at United Way is to increase the number of healthy children and adults in the United States. This is done with the help of volunteers who can share their time and talents by teaching others how to make the right lifestyle choices for preventing diseases and obesity. If you have expertise and experience to share, consider getting involved and contributing to the common good in your community.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips

Before you're ready to teach others about living a healthy lifestyle, you must be doing so yourself. That way, you're prepared to give others realistic tips and advice for making changes. It's important to understand that the health of individuals in a community contribute to the collective well being of everyone who lives there. Making the following choices sets a good example in your community and gives you the knowledge to encourage others to do the same.

  • Limit fast food, processed snacks, soda, candy, and other unhealthy food choices. Instead, opt for a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low fat dairy foods.
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. This gives you energy, burns calories for weight control, and helps prevent a plethora of health conditions that include heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.
  • Avoid cigarettes, which increase the risk of health problems. Limit alcohol. Too much can interfere with living a healthy lifestyle by increasing caloric intake, lowering inhibitions, and making it hard to engage in healthy activities, such as exercise.

Charting a Course for Change

United Way is charting a course for change by advancing health in communities across the nation. You can get involved with this in several ways.

  • Work within your neighborhood to make healthy foods and opportunities to exercise available.
  • Partner with schools to make it easier for students to make healthy choices as well as giving teachers the tools to educate kids.
  • Teach parents to make healthier choices by helping educate them through workshops, and aiding with policy changes to make nutritional information readily available.

Living a healthy lifestyle is enhanced by volunteering and contributing to the common good in your neighborhood. You'll get a boost to your self confidence when you see how your talents benefit others, you'll meet new people, and you may even be able to network and build your career at the same time. Combine your healthy lifestyle choices with volunteer work and your entire community can reap the rewards.
