There’s an App for That?

It’s easier than ever to give back.  United Ways in Iowa have launched a free app for iPhones, iPads, and iPods which allow users to map volunteer opportunities in the Cedar Rapids or Des Moines metro areas.  The apps are believed to be the first of their kind in the United States.  App users also can review, respond and share any of the several hundred volunteer opportunities that are listed.  United Way of East Central Iowa launched its app in April and United Way of Central Iowa’s app became available in August.  Learn more through this short video.

As United Way celebrates its 125th year, I can’t help but wonder if our founders could have imagined how advances in technology would advance the common good.  While many United Ways have connected volunteers with opportunities for a long time, this “anywhere, anytime” application – all with a few touches or swipes of the button -- means we can engage more people in our long term goals to reduce the number of high school dropouts, improve families’ financial stability and promote good health for all.  You don’t have to live in Iowa to have easy access to volunteer opportunities near you.  Click here and enter your zip code to find volunteer opportunities in your community.  The few seconds you spend today may help improve a life tomorrow.
