Seven Metro Detroit High Schools Targeted for Turnaround

Seven metro Detroit high schools with excessive dropout rates were named last week as partners in the “Networks of Excellence” initiative managed by United Way for Southeastern Michigan and funded by a five-year $27.1 million grant from the General Motors Foundation.

This is the second such network of schools; the first was established in 2008. Smaller learning academies, and an Early Childhood Learning Community designed to help prepare children for kindergarten, also will be created in each of the designated schools.

The money, which is the largest donation in the 34-year history of the GM Foundation, is aimed at reducing the nearly 50 percent dropout rate in parts of Metro Detroit where the most manufacturing jobs have been lost in recent years.
